Book Design

Books projects are always really fun. I get to work with people who are excited about what they are creating and are always delighted when they finally get to hold the finished product in their hands. Having designed and printed a couple of my own books, I know the feeling — and I’m always honored to be part of that process.

I offer design services for the cover artwork as well as the pages of the book and any necessary supporting artwork.

This is one of those fun projects that had a general outline for content, but that grew and evolved as the design developed. For example, instead of a list of highlights from the year, I thought a timeline with thumbnails would be a more interesting way to present the information. Also, since the organization’s biggest assets are its relationships and connections to other people, I decided to add a playful staff profile section–just another opportunity to say “hi! we’re actual people and not just some name on an automated phone menu somewhere.”
I created all of the staff illustrations and shot most of the photos.

I put this design together using an existing color scheme and and some seed layout ideas. And I got some props for it here.

RFP Campaign Collateral

I created this artwork as part of an RFP for a marketing campaign for the State of Colorado. The client came to me with the “Meet the Farmer” campaign idea and together, we came up with the ideas for the types of collateral that could help to connect people with their local food producers. The only existing artwork for the campaign was the Colorado Proud logo.

I created this artwork as part of an RFP for a marketing campaign for the State of Colorado. The client came to me with the “Meet the Farmer” campaign idea, and together we came up with the ideas for the types of collateral that could help to connect people with their local food producers. The RFP required a full page print ad and one billboard design. It also required use of the existing Colorado Proud logo.

I took things a step further by creating a series of collectible “Meet the Farmer” stat cards. These stat cards are small enough to be placed right by the food items in the stores where they’re sold. They give a little snapshot of who these people are and what it takes for them to produce your food.

Neighborhood Guides

Starting in 2007, I partnered with Mickki Langston of the Mile High Business Alliance to create a series of neighborhood guides to showcase the local businesses in those neighborhood. With a ridiculous turn around time from concept to print in 4 weeks, we produced 4 guides. And as soon as those first 4 guides hit the streets, they became wildly popular with business owners and shoppers.

About the Project
In 2007, I partnered with Mickki Langston of the Mile High Business Alliance to create a series of neighborhood guides to showcase the local businesses in those neighborhood. With a ridiculous turn around time from concept to print in 4 weeks, we produced 4 guides. And as soon as those first 4 guides hit the streets, they became wildly popular with business owners and shoppers.

Copying is the Greatest Form of Flattery
But it still kind of stinks when it happens to you. In 2010, a neighborhood wanted a Local Flavor GuideTM, but at the last minute decided to make their own guide. Strangely enough, their guide looked one heck of a lot like a Local Flavor GuideTM. Not long after that, more guides were popping up in other neighborhoods. The feedback we were getting was that the Local Flavor Guides were so nice, they looked like they were being made by a larger company — instead of by 1 designer and 1-2 coordinators. What can I say? We started something even more important than a set of guides to local businesses: we inspired people to take ownership and take action on behalf of their neighborhoods and local businesses. And isn’t that what we were trying to do in the first place?

It’s a great reminder to do what you love, doing it passionately and with the highest quality you can muster, and you’ll get where you’re going, even if the journey wasn’t what you expected.

My Role in this Project
Once we established the wireframes for what we were trying to accomplish, I designed the overall look for the guide series and each individual guide. The images used in each guide is a combination of photography that I shot, illustrations I drew, and a handful of stock images.
