South Broadway (SoBo) Local Flavor Guide – 2nd Edition

About the Neighborhood

This project is part of the Local Flavor Guide series produced by the Mile High Business Alliance. SoBo is short for South Broadway, which is also a bit of a misnomer as half of the shopping district is North Broadway. SoBo is home to some great dirty bars, live music, sex shops, head shops, and some kitchy boutiques. The Mayan Theatre (arguably the best indie film spot in Denver) marks the main intersection of the neighborhood at 1st & Broadway. The art direction for this guide, as always is to give a good feel of the neighborhood.

I designed the overall look for the guide series and each individual guide. The images used in each guide is a combination of photography that I shot, illustrations I drew, and some stock images. Scroll through the images above to see the finished guide and the photos I took for it.

Local Flavor Guides

About the Project

The Local Flavor Guide series is produced by the Mile High Business Alliance. We started this project back in the fall of 2007 when Local Flavor Marketing Group met the Business Alliance at a local first festival. We knew immediately that we could work together and work together well to make some great stuff happen. We supported the project so much that we gave it our name and brand. Though our brand has since changed, the Local Flavor Guides are strong and well-established in Denver neighborhoods.

My Role in this Project

We developed the over brand for the project along with the concept of exactly what purpose the guides should serve. Since then, I design each guide including most photos and illustrations.

Old South Pearl Street Local Flavor Guide

About the Neighborhood

This project is part of the Local Flavor Guide series produced by the Mile High Business Alliance. Old South Pearl Street is the quintessential Denver neighborhood. Lined with a variety of boutiques and restaurants and surrounded by well-kept and colorful brick bungalows, Old South Pearl can make for a lovely afternoon stroll. The neighborhood can also boast to be home to some of the best sushi in the world, as the award-winning Sushi Den marks the main cross roads at South Pearl and E Florida Ave. This intersection is also the location of the farmers market, which takes place on Saturdays in the summer months.

My Role in this Project

This guide is part of the first four guides we put together (E Colfax, Santa Fe, Gaylord, Pearl). For these first four guides, I created the umbrella brand for Local Flavor Guides and the basic concept for what information was to be included and how it was to be laid out. I also gathered all of the information on the businesses on foot with clipboard in-hand to make sure everything was accurate.

The art direction for this guide, as always is to give a good feel of the neighborhood. The images used in each guide is a combination of photography that I shot, illustrations I drew, and some stock images. Scroll through the images above to see the finished guide and the photos I took for it. You can download a pdf of the guide from MHBA’s site.
